Gröna Lund (Swedish pronunciation:[ɡrøːnaˈlɵnːd]; lit. "Green Grove"), or colloquially Grönan (Swedish pronunciation:[ˈɡrø̂ːnan]), is an amusement park in Stockholm, Sweden. Located on the seaward side of Djurgården Island, it is relatively small compared to other amusement parks, mainly because of its central location, which limits expansion. [edit]Gröna Lund's roots are in the s, making it Sweden's oldest amusement park. However the area has been used for similar purposes since the early 18th century. In , a German by the name of Jacob Schultheis[sv] rented the area to erect "carousels and other amusements". Until , descendants of Schultheis ran Gröna Lund. Before the amusement park came into being, Gröna Lund was the name of a small park.

History
In , the amusement park Gröna Lund opened. The idea to open an amusement park in Stockholm right on Djurgården came from Jacob Schultheis. He came from Germany and had already been to Gothenburg and previously had various entertainment specializations there. But after complaints and other reasons, he closed his business and went to Stockholm. Here he rented the land where Gröna Lund is located. It started as a small amusement park but today it is a large amusement park.
During the 19th century, it was quite common with small amusement parks a bit everywhere in Stockholm. These were places that suited everyone who wanted to enjoy dance, variety, carousels and good food. It was a bit of an escape from the rather heavy everyday life. But when the city's inhabitants increased, land was needed to build more homes and in only Gröna Lund remained..
